The archives of Gunnar Ekelöf

One of many archives to have been added to the e-catalogue Alvin is the archive of writer and poet Gunnar Ekelöf (1907-1968).

This extremely comprehensive collection includes the manuscripts of the well-known poetry works Sent på jorden (“Late on Earth”), Färjesång (“Ferry Song”) and Non serviam (“Non Serviam”), as well as materials and manuscripts from Díván-trilogin (“The Diwan Trilogy”). For those with an interest in finding out more about Ekelöf, there are also school reports, autobiographical texts, accounts and family papers. Together, these give us a picture not only of the writer but also of Gunnar Ekelöf the man.

Uppsala University Library bought the collection in 1970. At that time, it consisted of materials owned by the writer at the time of his death, but has since been expanded to include materials from others who owned papers relating to Ekelöf.

Ekelöf was elected to the Swedish Academy in 1958. In addition to his own poetry, he also translated the works of a number of new foreign writers into Swedish. He has influenced and inspired future poets and writers, both during his lifetime and since his death, and is regarded as one of Sweden’s most important literary figures.
